May is Mental Health Month! Many of us neglect or push our mental health to the background, when we really should prioritize our self-care. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. This is why caring for ourselves and our mental health is so important.
So here are 5 ways to practice self-care for your mental health!
Listen to your favorite music!
A great way to practice self-care is to take some time to listen to your favorite music for a release of some feel-good endorphins! Listening to music has been known to lower your blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and improve memory, mood, and your quality of sleep! I know that when one of my favorite songs starts playing my mood instantly improves and it puts a huge smile on my face!
Read a book!
Reading has so many benefits for us and our mental health. Reading can help you escape from your worries and the world around you. Studies have also shown that even reading less than 10 minutes a day can sharpen your brain, improve quality of sleep, and can even reduce stress.
Many people choose to read a book that they have read many times before. There is just something so comforting about reading a book that you know and love!
Get Outside!
Being outside provides your body with a boost of vitamin D from the sun! Vitamin D helps support the immune system, manage calcium levels, and supports healthy bones! Getting outdoors on a sunny day can also provide a boost of serotonin to improve your mood!
Another benefit of getting outside is being surrounded by plants! Being around plants has been known to provide a sense of peace. One way to get this peaceful feeling even on a rainy day is to visit a greenhouse or plant nursery!
Invest in your Mental Health
You are more than worth that investment! Counseling is an amazing tool to care for your mental health. Seeing a counselor has been proven to help people gain a better sense of self-confidence, improve their communication skills, and provide relief from mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Don’t Neglect Your Rest
On average most adults need anywhere between 7-9 hours of sleep per night to be fully rested. Resting intentionally can increase focus and productivity. There are many benefits to getting enough rest and rest doesn’t always mean sleep. These benefits include improved creativity, reduced stress, and an overall boost to your wellbeing.
There are many ways that you can rest. Here are just a few!
Close your eyes and take a few deep cleansing breaths.
Take a quick power nap.
Take a few hours to “unplug” and focus on something that you enjoy.
